Dr. Chris Koutures recognized for his significant contribution to the sports science of volleyball
ActiveKidMD is pleased to announce that USA Volleyball has honored Chris Koutures, MD, FAAP with the Jonathan Reeser Sport Science Award. This distinction was given to Dr. Koutures in reorganization of his significant contribution to the sports science of volleyball through clinical contributions in the care of volleyball players.
“This award is a tribute to all the players, coaches, and medical colleagues who have been my teachers about the game of volleyball,” said Dr. Koutures. “My contribution to volleyball is taking what I have learned and trying to share that knowledge with players of all ages and their families.”
This award was named in honor of Jonathan Reeser, M.D., who served as the first chair of the USA Volleyball Sports Science committee. Dr. Reeser was instrumental in gaining support for the work of the sport science industry in volleyball player development through the enhancement of their performance and the prevention and treatment of injuries.
The award is given to the person that has contributed to volleyball medical and injury care prevention for at least three years to volleyball players at the club, intercollegiate or international levels. In addition, to the person who has provided significant contribution to the training methodology to aid in volleyball skill acquisition or to enhance volleyball performance.
Dr. Koutures began working with the USA Volleyball Men’s National Team in 2005 when the training base was moved to the American Sports Center in Anaheim. In 2008, Dr. Koutures fulfilled a lifetime dream by serving as the Medical Team Physician for USA Men’s and Women’s Indoor and Beach Volleyball and Table Tennis in the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympics. The next year, Dr. Koutures began working more closely with the USA Volleyball Women’s National Team after they also moved the training base to Anaheim in 2009.
Dr. Koutures has treated indoor and sand volleyball patients of all ages – from early school age through adult competitors. He has also written several articles and blog posts on volleyball injury prevention and performance enhancement, including:

These articles and blogs share knowledge that Dr. Koutures has been fortunate to obtain by working with elite volleyball athletes and medical colleagues. One of these is Aaron Brock MS, ATC, CSCS, the Director of Sports Medicine and Performance for the USA Volleyball National Teams (and himself the 2015 recipient of the Jonathan Reeser Sport Science Award).
“Dr. Koutures has been a trusted colleague for over a decade,” said Aaron Brock. “During this time as Team Physician for USA Volleyball, he’s constantly demonstrating integrity, compassion, and the highest level of commitment to patient care. Not only do I entrust our Olympic athletes to Dr. Koutures, but he cares for my three children as well. From infants to Olympians, Dr. Chris Koutures is as good as it gets.”
In addition to his work with the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Volleyball Teams, Dr. Koutures is also a team physician and consultant for Cal State Fullerton Intercollegiate Athletics, Chapman University Dance Department, and the American Ballet Theater Gillespie School of Dance.
